Meet Christine Kalu, Founder of Sound Mind Behavioral Health
Taking the first step toward healing requires immense courage. Whether you’re seeking support for yourself, your child, or a loved one — please know you’re not alone. At Sound Mind Behavioral Health, your journey is seen, respected, and deeply honored.
I’m Christine Kalu, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over ten years of experience supporting children, adolescents, and adults through emotional, behavioral, and psychiatric challenges. My clinical journey has included work at renowned institutions such as Sheppard Pratt and various outpatient programs, where I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside individuals seeking clarity, healing, and hope.
I founded Sound Mind Behavioral Health with a clear mission: to provide personalized, compassionate care in a space where clients feel seen, heard, and empowered. Here, we believe that healing is not only possible — it’s within reach. Whether you’re seeking support for anxiety, depression, ADHD, or life transitions, we offer evidence-based treatment that’s thoughtful, inclusive, and grounded in dignity and respect.
My personal faith is an important part of my life and practice. While care at Sound Mind is always client-centered and respectful of individual beliefs, my faith reminds me daily that each person is uniquely created and capable of growth, resilience, and restoration.
At Sound Mind, we offer psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and individualized treatment plans tailored to your specific goals. Most importantly, we provide a safe, judgment-free environment where your story matters.
Healing takes courage. You don’t have to walk this path alone.I look forward to partnering with you on your journey toward wellness.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse?
A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse is a licensed healthcare professional who provides expert care to individuals experiencing mental illness, emotional distress, or behavioral disorders. They play a vital role in mental health treatment by offering assessments, therapeutic support, medication management, and crisis intervention. With advanced training in psychiatric nursing, they work closely with patients, families, and healthcare teams to promote recovery and overall emotional well-being.
What does a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse do?
A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse specializes in caring for individuals with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders. They assess mental health needs, provide therapy, administer medications, educate patients and families, and collaborate with a healthcare team to develop personalized care plans.
Can a Psychiatric Nurse prescribe medication?
Yes, in many regions, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs)—advanced practice nurses—are licensed to diagnose mental illnesses and prescribe medications. Scope of practice may vary by state or country, but PMHNPs often work independently or alongside psychiatrists to manage medication and treatment.
When should someone see a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse?
It’s a good time to consult a psychiatric nurse when someone is struggling with ongoing mental health issues like mood swings, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, or trauma-related symptoms. Early support from a psychiatric nurse can help manage symptoms, prevent crises, and improve overall mental well-being through holistic, compassionate care.
